I’m new to this group, but have found it interesting looking through the various posts. I went to a Prep school in the late 60’s when caning was the accepted norm. The Headmaster ruled by fear as well as the cane; he was the only one to cane boys and every other day some chaps name was read out(sometimes many)at assembly to report to his study afterwards. This meant bending over for the cane and more often than not the HM would leave his door open so everyone could hear the strokes;it was not a large building. At 13 I went on to a Public school where again caning was commonplace, either by the Headmaster or by the various Housemasters, and it was a sad day indeed when caning was abolished in the 80’s. My generation have many tales to tell, but I’m not sure the younger generation are really interested; school-life without the cane or slipper must be very boring!
I too went to a prep school which had a strict regime, and there were times when, if you were unlucky, you could be punished twice for one misdemeanour. E.G. a teacher would sometimes send you out of the class, either to stand on the ‘naughty mat’ in the corridor, or underneath the clock in the assembly hall. Both places were very public, and designed to shame you in front of passersby. That WAS the punishment. However, if either the headmaster or deputy head saw you there, they would beckon you over, walk ahead of you to their room, pull their slipper out of their desk, and whack your arse, without asking what you had done wrong. Then it was back to standing under the clock until your teacher sent a pupil out to get you to rejoin the class.
So it was like a game of Russian roulette – you never knew if you were going to be given a slippering, and you kept listening intently for those familiar footsteps. I must have had the slipper in this way at least 4 or maybe 5 times, never less than 4 strokes, and that was from 2 big men. It bloody hurt!
Did anybody else undergo stressful punishments similar to that?
